How To Be A Great Leader

Recently, we asked the middle schoolers in our program for their big questions. One common response in particular drove me crazy.

They asked “How do I know God’s will for my life?”

I couldn’t believe that they asked that…but I saw it over and over again. Some said, “I know I should follow God’s will…but how do I know it?”

I couldn’t believe it – because we talk about this all the time. What I learned, though, is that we talked about the “bricks” so much we forgot to tell them that we’re talking about the “bricks” in a big “wall.” We just needed to talk about building the “wall” a bit more.

So we did.

That got me thinking about what we talk about here, on this blog. I talk about the “bricks” all the time. We talk about vision, mission, strategy, leading yourself, and we talk about culture. But, I’m not sure I ever stepped back and said, “Now, see how these “bricks” make a big “wall.”

Getting Back Into The Game

When we were trying to name this blog, and pick a Twitter name for that matter, we ran into the common problems.

A friend of mine asked me this question.

Dealing With Conflict

I’m reading two books by Lencioni simultaneously these days…

The Five Dysfunctions of a Team

and

Death By Meeting

I’m not sure that I’ll every do that again because I’m getting confused about who is who in the two leadership fables.  The good part though is that you get to see the similarities and common themes.

Lencioni is great at explaining the importance of conflict in a growing organization.  And that is clear as they are key elements in both books…I would recommend them BTW.

Manager or Custodian?

If I asked you when you were younger if you wanted to be a manager or a custodian, what would you say?

Yeah…me too.

But I think I’ve changed my mind!

Here’s the thing.  I’ve worked for two types of people.
